Prison Fellowship Rwanda (PFR), in partnership with the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA), UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and other partners, commemorated World Mental Health Day across refugee camps in Rwanda, reaffirming the importance of mental health, psychosocial well-being, and community support.
Guided by the themes “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change” and “Recovery from Alcohol Dependence and Good Mental Health Are Possible: My Contribution to Nation-Building,” the commemoration provided an opportunity to raise awareness about trauma, substance use, depression, and other mental health challenges while encouraging individuals to seek appropriate mental health and psychosocial support services.
Through awareness sessions, recreational activities, and community engagement, participants explored the importance of addressing psychological distress, promoting healthy coping mechanisms, and creating inclusive environments where people feel safe to share their experiences and seek support.
The initiative highlighted that mental health is a shared responsibility. By amplifying lived experiences, reducing stigma, and strengthening access to support services, PFR and its partners continue to promote dignity, resilience, recovery, and meaningful participation in community development.
Together, we can build communities where mental health matters and recovery is possible.
