On 21 September 2026, a preparatory session was conducted at Nyamagabe Correctional Facility for inmates convicted of crimes related to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi who are approaching the completion of their sentences. The session, titled “The Journey of Transformation and Contributing to Nation Building,” aimed to support their successful reintegration into families and communities.
The discussion highlighted concerns observed among some former inmates after release, including genocide ideology, denial or minimization of the Genocide against the Tutsi, harassment of Genocide against Tutsi survivors, family and community conflicts, non-participation in government programs, and risks of reoffending.
The session emphasized personal transformation as a continuous journey requiring acknowledgement of one’s role in past crimes, acceptance of historical truth, healing, reconciliation, and readiness to contribute positively to society. Participants reflected on Rwanda’s post-Genocide journey, including the consequences of the Genocide and national initiatives such as Ndi Umunyarwanda that have contributed to rebuilding unity.
Particular attention was given to the responsibility of inmates to prepare for peaceful coexistence with their families, neighbors, survivors, and wider communities after release. Participants were encouraged to embrace changes that have taken place in society and actively contribute to national development.
