Mahama Camp Marks World Refugee Day and the Day of the African Child with a Focus on Rights, Resilience, and Family Unity
On 23 June 2023, Mahama Refugee Camp hosted a joint celebration of World Refugee Day and the Day of the African Child, bringing together representatives from the Programme for Refugees (PFR), UNHCR, MINEMA, partner organizations, refugees, and members of the host community.
The event aimed to recognize the resilience and contributions of refugees, while promoting the rights, welfare, and development of children, as well as broader human rights principles.
A key highlight of the celebration was an initiative led by PFR in partnership with Mahama Sector, which supported 23 families in formalizing their marriages through a legal marriage ceremony. This intervention is significant in strengthening family unity, providing legal protection for spouses and children, and fostering social cohesion within the camp and surrounding communities.
The celebration underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in creating an environment where refugees and children can live with dignity, security, and opportunity.
